Biography

Yusuf Ali is an Associate Professor of Metabolic Disease with tenure at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is currently Assistant Dean of External Affairs and the current Director of the Nutrition, Metabolism and Health Research Programme. Yusuf’s foray into science started at a young age where he spent time, perhaps too much time, collecting Science Club medals in his lower formative school years. Later, he went on to receive the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) scholarships for his PhD and postdoctoral training at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and at the Karolinska Institute Sweden, respectively. He started his laboratory in NTU Singapore in 2014. Yusuf has been researching on diabetes for the past 13 years and he continues to publish landmark scientific papers and ground-breaking discoveries on aberrant pancreatic hormone release in a disease that continues to affect so many in Singapore and around the world. Currently, his laboratory is focused on understanding pre-diabetes, an Asian diabetic phenotype, the specifically the impact of dietary lipids on insulin secretion. He is a co-inventor of an oral insulin delivery technology. Apart from teaching Metabolism and Endocrinology to medical students, Yusuf is continuously strengthening the international network of scientists and endocrinologists with emphasis on creating a clinical research nexus between Singapore and international partners. Yusuf is also a spokesperson on various community and media platforms aimed at promoting diabetes awareness.
