Better education doesn’t happen by accident—it’s designed, studied, and refined.
With that perspective, CHES was established to pursue the vision of “Promoting health through education scholarship”.
We bring together researchers, educators, clinicians, learners, and patients to build a vibrant community of individuals seeking to improve how health professionals are selected, trained, supported, and assessed across their careers. We generate evidence, provide mentorship, and support practice so education within the Faculty of Medicine at UBC and beyond can better serve our communities.
To help determine how you might benefit from engaging with that network, here is a quick overview of CHES activities, sequenced by depth of immersion. Keep in mind that many of these activities are (or can be) virtual, so living outside of Vancouver and/or working at a distributed site should not be a barrier to engagement. For more detailed information, please explore our website or reach out to us at ches.admin@ubc.ca.
Looking to stay informed about developments and opportunities within health professional education?
- Sign up for CHES Membership to receive quarterly newsletters outlining current happenings. If you work at a Distributed Site, we would also encourage you to reach out to your program’s CHES liaison for information on activity in your local area.
Ready to engage in discussion with a community of individuals with similar interests?
- See the Events section of our website for a list of public events including monthly presentations, webinars, and our annual CHES Celebration of Scholarship (generally held in October with the submission portal opening in April).
Do you have a project idea or desire to delve into a particular educational issue?
- CHES faculty provide routine consultation to individuals and groups regarding scholarly practice and research in health professional education. Seed funding is sometimes available – check here. We also host “mini-sabbaticals” aimed at advancing visitors’ thinking and project planning. These range from a day to many months and can be virtual or in-person, so please reach out to inquire about how something can be tailored to your situation.
Desiring more formal training?

- Our Master’s of Health Professions Education, run in collaboration with Western University and the University of Maastricht, is a 2 to 5 year program enabling connection into an international network of health professionals from all disciplines. We also train PhD students in collaboration with various programs and have Postdoctoral Fellowship opportunities. Send any inquiries to cef.program@ubc.ca.
See education leadership as a core component of your future career?
- The Clinical Educator Fellowship Program is an intensive program (usually 0.8FTE for 2 years or 0.4FTE for 4 years), with an Indigenous Stream, comprised of three core components: (1) Completion of a Master’s degree; (2) Experiential learning through focused and varied teaching activity; and (3) Engagement with CHES members through an Academic Half Day aimed at additional skill and knowledge development.
