Purpose of Visit

Sandrijn tries to visit CHES on a regular basis to enjoy an exchange of ideas and gain inspiration from scholars in the CHES community. As she recently took on a new role in the UCSF School of Medicine focused on faculty development and continues to think about ways to expand and augment simulation-based learning she is excited to spend some time away from the daily grind and receive advice and input to inform her future work.

Biography

Dr. Sandrijn van Schaik is a Professor of Pediatrics and the Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California San Francisco. She is the Baum Family Presidential Chair for Experiential Learning and serves as the Education Director of UCSF’s Simulation Center. As of March 1, 2023 she is taking on a new role as Director of Faculty Development for the School of Medicine, charged with expanding UCSF’s faculty development offerings to reach all who teach and supervise learners at UCSF and ensuring that all faculty development offerings are designed through an anti-oppressive lens. While her initial research and PhD work focused on immunology, for the past 15 years she has engaged in educational research and innovation. She completed the UCSF Teaching Scholar Program in 2009, followed by a Medical Education Research Fellowship at UCSF in 2010-12, and the Josiah Macy Jr Foundation Faculty Scholars Program in 2012-14. She currently has a Macy Board grant to create a scorecard for clinical learning environments, and is involved in a number of research endeavors examining ways to augment the benefits of simulation-based education. She is a member of the UCSF Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators and the National Academy of Distinguished Educators in Pediatrics.
