Visiting Scholar

Edvin Schei, MD, PhD

Professor, Section for general practice,
Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care
University of Bergen, Norway

Date of Visit: November 10, 2025

Biography

Dr. Edvin Schei is professor of family medicine at University of Bergen, Norway. Schei has been a visiting scholar at Boston University, McGill University in Montreal, and Maastricht University.

After graduating, Dr. Schei found himself ill-prepared for the aspects of doctoring that deal with clinical uncertainty and people’s suffering and «non-fixable» problems. Seeking deeper understanding and better tools for clinical work, he has introduced insights from philosophy, psychology and leadership theory into family medicine and undergraduate education, with an emphasis on listening skills, patient-centeredness, and reflection. His current research concerns clinical learning environments – PROFMED is an intervention study seeking to improve clinical learning by forging alliances between fourth-year medical students and residents in the medical department. An aspect of the PROFMED project is to develop an educational model, “The House of Learning”, distinguishing three kinds of knowing that clinical learners engage in: 1. Social survival, 2. Biomedical knowledge and 3. Clinical wisdom.
