Date of Visit: September 4 – November 30, 2025
Biography
Susie’s primary work has been in clinical practice as an Emergency Physician and in junior doctor education in the hospital setting. More recently, she has transitioned to UGME, where she led a year-long course that facilitates Case Based Clinical Reasoning at Bond University. She was also an active member of the Human Research Ethics Committee at this institution. She is currently the Critical Care Lead for NewMed Education, an innovative UGME alternative that is undergoing accreditation in Australia. NewMed is focused on supporting the education of doctors in the regional, rural and remote setting. In this context she is the Critical Care Lead, working predominantly to help develop the hospital year program, and is assembling the framework for Clinical Reasoning that NewMed will use across its curriculum.
Purpose of Visit
Susie is studying at Regent College on the UBC Campus in the Fall semester 2025, and undertaking a mini-sabbatical at CHES. In this time, she hopes to explore a number of projects for NewMed Education, particularly learning about Selection into Medical School for regionally based students and Learning Design that creates and maintains community, for remote/ online students.
There are many similarities in the Australian and Canadian health care contexts. This is especially so in the areas of regional and rural medical education and practice, and Susie hopes her learnings from the experience of the Canadian educators can inform the development of the NewMed program.
