Biography
Peter Sargious, MD, MPH, FRCPC is co-chair of the Alberta Minister of Health’s Diabetes Working Group, past Senior Medical Director of the Diabetes, Obesity and Nutrition Strategic Clinical Network with Alberta Health Services, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Calgary and a practicing general internist at Calgary’s Peter Lougheed Hospital. He has been leading innovations in Alberta’s health system since 1997, first in the area of Health Informatics then, for the past 20 years, in Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (CDPM). During that time, he co-chaired two international conferences in CDPM and authored the federal government’s synthesis document on CDPM as part of the Primary Health Care Transition Initiative of the mid 2000s. He was instrumental in bridging public health and urban design communities of practice at Toronto’s 2007 International Walk21 Conference, and in bringing the Walk21 Conference to Vancouver and Calgary in 2011 and 2017, respectively. For his accomplishments in Health Informatics and CDPM, he was selected for the Governor General’s Study Tour in 2000 and awarded the Department of Medicine’s inaugural Innovation Award in 2006.
Purpose of Visit
Alongside his health system leadership, he maintains a research interest in exploring commonalities between the acquisition of expertise in medicine compared with other cognitive domains. To that end, he collaborated with researchers at the University of Calgary’s Department of Psychology to co-author a number of sentinel papers related to Scrabble™ as a domain of cognitive expertise. During his sabbatical, he is particularly interested in collaborating with researchers in the fields of health education, health informatics, cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence to explore new transdisciplinary approaches to designing, training and evaluating the healthcare workforce of the future.
