Dr. Rabia Khan is a critical social scientist that explores humanism in the health professions. Using critical theory and qualitative methodologies, she studies relations of power and how they influence what is possible for individuals to do, say and be. Dr. Khan brings together her intersectional identities in her research, teaching and advocacy to normalize embodiment in her commitment to making the world a more equitable, inclusive, and just place for all people.

Dr. Khan completed a Fellowship at the Wilson Centre for Health Professions Education and obtained her PhD at the Institute of Medical Sciences at the University of Toronto, where her dissertation, Dying to Stay Alive in Residency and Beyond: A Critical Discourse Analysis of ‘Burnout’, examined the relationship between ‘burnout’ and ‘suicide’ in post graduate medical education. This research explores the sociocultural and sociohistorical conditions that contribute to disillusionment in medicine, and with life itself. Furthermore, her research makes visible the epistemic injustice of excluding differing bodies such as women, disabled, neurodiverse, Indigenous, Black and queer trainees (among other intersectional marginalized groups), from research addressing what it means to be ‘well’ in medicine.

Dr. Khan is also designated a Global Scholar, having completed the Dalla Lana School of Public Health’s Collaborative Doctoral Program in Global Health. Her research interests in this area include the ethics of global health research and the globalization of health professions education.
