Abstract

Competence has emerged as the dominant discourse for understanding the work of health professionals in education and regulation yet it is unclear as to whether this has actually resulted in safer and more effective practice. This presentation will review the various competing – and at times conflicting – understandings of competence and focus on evolving psychological models rooted in practitioners’ lived experiences. Unintended consequences of narrow or exclusionary conceptions of competence will be highlighted as will opportunities to reframe understanding of competence to provide more collegial models of regulation and professional development.
