Katharine Low
Senior Lecturer in Performance and Medical Humanities Education
GKT School of Medical Education, King’s College London
Date of Visit: January 27-29, 2026
Biography
I am Senior Lecturer in Medical Humanities at King’s College London based in Victoria. I specialise in theatre and performance pedagogies, embodied relational learning and radical kindness as a teaching pedagogy. My specific focus is on medical students’ learning and belonging. My research-practice explores emancipatory research practices, shifting cultural representations of stigmatised illnesses (e.g. HIV) and explores deeper understandings of health experiences through participatory arts-based community collaborations (e.g. women’s health). I have over 20 years’ experience in a variety of applied theatre practices, working in the fields of sexual health, gender equity and urban violence, in the UK and internationally and more recently with future doctors in healthcare education. My research is embedded in collaborations with arts and cultural organisations, medical practitioners and NGOs to co-facilitate participatory theatre and arts-based projects based around social concerns. Publications include: Applied Theatre and Sexual Health Communication: Apertures of Possibility (2020, Palgrave Macmillan). I host the Positively Women: Past and Present podcast.
Purpose of Visit
Dr. Low will be visiting CHES several times over the next six months. For her first visit, she is keen to meet the community of colleagues at CHES and find connectivity. She would like to:
-
To understand the breath of research that CHES researchers are engaging in.
-
To meet the community of colleagues at CHES and scope connectivity.
-
To share my approaches to radical kindness as a relational pedagogy (considering belonging, neurodivergence and self-empathy in medical education training).
-
To better understand the Canadian and international healthcare education contexts.
-
To explore potential participatory and emancipatory research projects, developed in collaboration
