Biography
Fury Maulina is a junior researcher and educator in the Faculty of Medicine, Aceh, Indonesia. She obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Indonesia, and, in 2024, she completed her PhD at the School of Health Professions Education (SHE), Maastricht University, the Netherlands. Growing up in Aceh throughout the insurgency period—from primary school to senior high school—has inspired her to become a physician and, later, also shaped her research interest in physician leadership within rural and remote primary care and healthcare systems in underserved environments. Using the LEADS framework, she developed a dissertation about physician leadership development in rural and remote settings in the Indonesian context and how local values and culture can influence leadership practices. Recently, she developed a (proposal) project on how primary care physicians interact with Indigenous communities toward distinct healthcare challenges. With the intention of ‘sharing is caring,’ her research aims to share ‘the story’ with the world of how struggling physician leaders serve underserved communities.
Purpose of Visit
With the purpose of ‘learning’ from CHES, during the visit, she would like to learn in three areas, i.e. research, teaching, and academic networking. Regarding research, given that CHES has many experiences interacting with Indigenous communities and also focuses on building research in this context, she hopes to have discussions and gain constructive feedback from CHES scholars in her project related to Indigenous communities. For teaching purposes, she would like to gain insights about how CHES tailors and structures their teaching and learning activities to foster critical thinking and reflective learning among medical students. Lastly, according to academic networking, she is excited to initiate and build relationships with CHES scholars through mentorship opportunities and joint research projects, particularly those related to physician leadership and rural-remote health education.
Fury is the recipient of the Glenn Regehr Global Networking & Visitor Fund.
