CPSBC Call for Research Proposals

Ensuring excellence and professionalism in professional practice

This title offers the fundamental mission of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC). As the way in which this mission is fulfilled continues to evolve it is necessary to conduct systematic and rigorous research into the strategies through which we assure quality of care within the context of BC licensed physicians. This call for proposals announces the availability of funding to support small research projects that will advance understanding of relevant issues.

Applications using quantitative or qualitative research methods will be welcome. Up to two separate awards valued at a maximum of $6,000 will be funded. Hardware (e.g., computers, audio recorders) and travel are ineligible expenses. At least one co-applicant must be a faculty member at an academic institution that is capable of fulfilling the role of a research sponsor. The CPSBC does not intend to name specific topic areas as it welcomes applications on a wide range of issues of relevance to quality assurance of BC physicians.

To ensure that the decisions on funding are made at arm’s length from the CPSBC, the College has partnered with the Centre for Health Education Scholarship (CHES) in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. CHES will facilitate the proposal review, announce the results, and administer the grant funding. Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Evidence that the project links directly with the CPSBC mission
  • Clarity as to the aims and objectives of the work
  • Coherence between the aims, objectives, and the methods used
  • Clear description of the targets/outcomes and indication of how they will be achieved
  • Evaluation of the root cause of any outcomes observed (i.e., why observations arose)
  • Evidence as to whether or not the work has potential to continue (i.e., details of how successful candidates would use the funding to further extend the project)

Applications (in Word or PDF format) are due to the CHES Research Assistant (tasnia.khan@ubc.ca) by December 18, 2015 at midnight PST. They should be no longer than 2,000 words and should include no more than 2 illustrations and 10 references. Relevant content includes:

  • Background and rationale
  • What is the specific problem being addressed and why is it important?
  • Detail on design and methodology, including justification of sample size and analysis
  • Timeline, success criteria and barriers to proposed work
  • Ethics requirements and procedures
  • Expected outputs and Dissemination strategy

In addition, a one page CV for each applicant should be provided that highlights the relevant educational expertise and experience of the research team.
Finally, please provide a budget outlining the costs associated with undertaking the research described in the proposal.

  • Payments will be made to the contracted organization only.
  • Funds must be spent and the project completed within 12 months of receipt of funds
  • A final report on the study itself and on the use of the funding will be required within 6 months of study completion.
