Purpose of Visit

During her visit, Dr. Christensen will explore with members of CHES ideas regarding her own research in faculty development (the development of pedagogical competence) and the use of multisource feedback as part of pedagogical competence development, as well as her research with Sigurd Beier Sloth in the use of self-regulated learning to support technical skill development.

Biography

Dr. Christensen holds a Masters degree in human and social science of sport and pedagogy (1995) and a PhD in faculty development in Physical Education (2001), both at Copenhagen University, Denmark. Her research interests and expertise revolve around situational, social and cultural aspects of teaching and learning in higher education, as well as faculty development, careers, transfer and transitions in the fields of health sciences education and their professions. In particular, she is engaged in exploring the process of developing and changing professional identities and professionalism among teachers and supervisors in higher education. Methodologically, her research includes qualitative research interviews, expert interviews, biographical narratives and focus group interviews in combination with questionnaires and passive participant observation. Her theoretical expertise is within practice theory, inspired by sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and educational theorist Etienne Wenger. Dr. Christensen has published over 40 international peer-reviewed papers, supervised 13 PhD students and more than 20 master students, and participated in 9 international PhD assessment committees. She is currently vice-chair of the Danish Network for Educational Development in Higher Education (2014-present).

In addition to research, she a highly experienced educator with expertise in the areas of faculty development, curriculum development in health sciences educations, doctoral supervision, team-based learning, educational theory, talent development, and qualitative research methods. Currently, she runs supervisor courses for PhD supervisors, courses in teaching and learning for PhD students and assistant professors, a variety of faculty development workshops and a facilitated multisource feedback programme for experienced higher education teachers.
