Dates of Visit: February 13 – December 31, 2018

Purpose of Visit

During his sabbatical at CHES, Peter hopes to meet as many educators and researchers at CHES as possible. He intends to get out of his comfort zone in thinking about pedagogy and learning; reflect on the spiral curriculum and how it shapes learning; and learn a lot more about technology in learning and qualitative research skills. He hopes to be transformed in his attitudes, skills, and knowledge.

Biography

Dr. Peter Choi graduated from medical school at the University of British Columbia and completed his training in anesthesiology and clinical epidemiology at McMaster University. He currently practices anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at the Vancouver General and UBC Hospitals.

Peter is a CBL tutor and a clinical preceptor in the UBC MD Undergraduate Program. He was involved in the development and renewal of the UBC medical curriculum as the Associate Director for Years 1 and 2 from 2015 to 2017. He especially enjoys having first- and second-year medical students shadow him in the operating room, where they can see the relevance and application of their knowledge in a real-life setting.

Peter is interested in how students move from memorization of concepts to competent application of concepts in clinical practice. He has incorporated role play and low-fidelity simulation in his teaching sessions. As someone without any pedagogical training, he is looking forward to learning more about how students learn and finding / improving ways to help students master concepts in medicine.
