CHES Scientist & Scholar Role Descriptions

CHES Scientist

  1. Faculty members who are hired for the purpose of fulfilling the mission and aspirational objectives of the Centre for Health Education Scholarship. Their activities include:
    • Establishing and expanding an independent line of scholarly work and a program of research;
    • Assuming significant teaching and service responsibilities including supervision of learners at CHES;
    • Supporting CHES activities, people, and perspectives through leadership activities in health professions education at UBC, nationally and internationally;
    • Assuming administrative responsibilities related to the functioning and general operation of the Centre.
  2. Appointments as CHES Scientists are typically made through a formal faculty hiring process (i.e., they are individuals whose work is predominantly within the Centre despite needing to be appointed as faculty through an academic department).

CHES Scholar

  1. Demonstrates a sustained (> 1-2 year) commitment to the mission and strategic direction of CHES through their: collaboration and consultation with the CHES community; teaching and supervision of CHES learners and trainees; and/or their participation in other core CHES activities. This should include, but is not limited to:
    • Meeting with and providing expertise to CHES Visitors and UBC Faculty in a consultative role, in support of others’ scholarly activities;
    • Performing a liaison role with a core group or site on behalf of CHES (e.g., NMP, Postgrad, non-MD Faculty, etc.);
    • Fostering a culture of collaboration and building capacity through networking activities;
    • Contributing to health professions education scholarship through leadership, teaching, and/or research.
  2. Appointments as CHES Scholar are by invitation only, not application based.
