Abstract
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching defines community engagement as the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities for the mutually beneficial creation and exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. They characterize the purpose of community engagement as the partnership between universities and the public and private sectors to enrich scholarship, research and creative activity; enhance curriculum, teaching and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good. In our presentation we will describe the ways in which Patient & Community Partnership for Education (PCPE), in the Office of UBC Health, takes a participatory action research approach to engage with patients and the community to enhance the education of future and current health professionals. We will give examples of the impact on students and patients, and lessons learned.
Biography
Angela Towle is the co-founder, with William Godolphin, of Patient & Community Partnership for Education in the Office of UBC Health. PCPE develops, implements and evaluates innovative educational programs that involve patients and community members with lived experience as educators for health professional students. Angela’s commitment to university-community engagement led to her appointment in February 2013 as Academic Director of the UBC Learning Exchange with a responsibility to strengthen engagement between the university and Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside communities. Angela is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and Senior Scholar in the Centre for Health Education Scholarship at UBC where she co-coordinates the Maastricht Master of Health Professions Education program (MHPE-Canada).
Darren Lauscher has been a mentor and course facilitator within the UBC Health Sciences since 2012. He has served on numerous planning and advisory committees at the university, including the UBC Health Council. Darren is currently involved in several research projects at the provincial and national level on behalf of the McLaren Housing Society of BC, the Pacific AIDS Network, and CATIE, also sitting on the Community Advisory Committee for the Canadian HIV Trials Network. He sees these opportunities as being able to link research back to community and back into education as closing the loop to further enhance our overall knowledge in health care delivery.

The University of British Columbia Division of Continuing Professional Development (UBC CPD) is fully accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Continuing Medical Education (CACME) to provide study credits for continuing medical education for physicians. This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by UBC CPD. You may claim a maximum of 1.5 (x 10 sessions) hours (credits are automatically calculated). This Group Learning program meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by UBC CPD for up to 1.5 (x 10 sessions) Mainpro+ credits. Each physician should claim only those credits he/she actually spent in the activity.
