Abstract
Based on a qualitative doctoral study, this talk will develop the collaborative profiles of recently graduated physicians and nurses at tertiary training hospitals in Canada and the United Kingdom. Through interpretation of their early workplace experiences, it will highlight how identities and goals are renegotiated and how these in turn impact teamwork. It will briefly explore the social learning theories in search for explanations. Finally, it will address the assumptions, as well as the transformative possibilities related to interprofessional learning.
Biography
Dr. Kiran Veerapen completed medical training in Rheumatology in the United Kingdom and practiced as a Rheumatologist in Malaysia from 1986-2004. Prior to her appointment as Regional Faculty Development Director, Dr. Veerapen had been involved with the Island Medical Program for several years as part of the IMP Faculty Development team and as a facilitator for both PBL and DPAS courses. She has a long-standing interest in medical education and in 2008 completed a Masters in Medical Education degree through the University of Dundee, Scotland. In June 2012, Dr. Veerapen was awarded a PhD from the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program at the University of Victoria. Her doctoral thesis is entitled “The impact of uniprofessional medical and nursing education on the ability to work collaboratively”.

As an organization accredited to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS), the UBC Division of Continuing Professional Development designates this educational program as meeting the accreditation criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 1.5 Mainpro-M1 credits (per session). This program has been reviewed and approved by UBC Division of Continuing Professional Development. Each physician should claim only those credits he/she actually spent in the activity.
