Abstract
In this talk I will offer an introduction to the world of anesthetic practice, as seen through an educational lens. The operating room environment, and anesthetic practice in particular, is as reliant on education as it is on clinical skills to ensure success. What we don’t know about how education interacts with anesthetic practice far outweighs what is known. I will outline various areas of inquiry being explored by myself and the anesthesia education group, and by the conclusion of the talk participants will be left with insight into what directions medical education in anesthesia is taking at UBC. Specific domains will include the role of simulation, procedural skills training, collaborative learning, and patient safety.
Biography
Dr. Oliver Applegarth has been a staff anesthesiologist at VGH/UBCH since 2006, where he is a member of the division of neuroanesthesia. He graduated anesthesia residency from UBC in 2005. He received a Masters of Education from UBC in 2009, where he was supervised by Dr. Dan Pratt. He is the Anesthesia Undergraduate Program Director for UBC’s Faculty of Medicine
