Abstract
In this presentation I will look back over three decades of research into and evaluation of interprofessional education and collaborative practice (IPECP) from a practical perspective – what does this all mean for health professionals and educators? I will discuss current projects and areas of interest, comparing work being undertaken globally, before considering what we need to focus on in the next few years. The opportunities and difficulties of working across professional and disciplinary boundaries will be highlighted, as well as the need to establish a common language in this field. The session will be interactive and I hope will challenge us to see things differently.
Biography
Professor Jill Thistlethwaite trained as a physician at University College London and worked as a general practitioner in a semi-rural family practice in Yorkshire, UK for 10 years before moving into academia. Her PhD from the University of Maastricht focused on shared decision making and medical education.
In 2003 Professor Thistlethwaite emigrated to Australia. Her main interests are interprofessional education (IPE), communication skills and professionalism. In 2010 she was a member of the World Health Organization’s study group on IPE. Professor Thistlethwaite has written and edited 10 books with another two in press, many book chapters and published over 90 peer-reviewed papers. She is co-editor in chief of The Clinical Teacher, associate editor of the Journal of Interprofessional Care and deputy editor of the Journal of Practice-based Learning. Recent books are Values-based Interprofessional Collaborative Practice. (2012) and Healthcare Professionalism at a Glance (2015).
In 2014 Professor Thistlethwaite was a Fulbright senior scholar and spent 4 months at the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education, University of Minnesota. During her stay she spoke at the Institute of Medicine in Washington DC on the nature of evidence for IPE.

This program is an Accredited Group Learning Activity eligible for up to 1.5 Section 1 credits as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This program has been reviewed and approved by UBC Division of Continuing Professional Development. Each physician should claim only those credits he/she actually spent in the activity.
