Purpose of Visit
Dr. West welcomes the chance to learn how to build capacity and community in educational scholarship among clinical educators. He also hopes to come away with a deeper appreciation for structural, relational and political/cultural resources that might be pivotal to the establishment of a center for educational scholarship within a pediatric hospital setting.
Biography
Daniel C. West, MD is Professor and Associate-Chair for Education in the Department of Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. West has over two decades of experience developing educational innovations that span the continuum of undergraduate and graduate medical education. With experience in assessment and measurement, Dr. West is currently working on projects related to competency based medical education across the UME/GME continuum, the use of workplace-based assessment to support learning in the clinical environment and the use of educational innovations to reduce handoff-related communication failures among health care providers with the goal of decreasing the rate of medical errors and improving patient safety. Dr. West has held a number of education leadership positions, including over two decades as a pediatric residency program director. Currently, Dr. West co-leads the I-PASS Study Group and the Education in Pediatrics Across the Continuum (EPAC) Study Group and holds the Distinguish Chair in Pediatric Medical Education at CHOP.
In his clinical work, Dr. West is a pediatric hematologist/oncologist with extensive experience treating children, adolescents and young adults with a wide variety of hematologic and oncologic conditions, especially bone sarcomas. Dr. West completed undergraduate degree and medical school training at the University of Florida, Pediatric Residency training at the University of California, San Francisco, and fellowship at Children’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Dr. West has won numerous awards including the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award (ACGME), the Walter W. Tunnessen, Jr. Award for Advancing Pediatric Resident Education (Association of Pediatric Program Directors), the John M. Eisenberg National Award for Patient Safety and Quality (co-winner with the other leaders of the I-PASS Study Group), and election into the Society for Pediatric Research and the American Pediatric Society.
