The Centre for Health Education Scholarship in the Faculty of Medicine at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for the position of Associate Director, Education. This is an administrative role with a five-year term appointment, with potential for renewal for a second term, subject to satisfactory review. This position has a time commitment of approximately 0.3FTE. It is expected to be filled by an internal candidate who holds a faculty appointment at UBC or is eligible to hold a faculty position in an academic unit. The CHES Associate Director, Education will take a leadership role in directing both the Clinical Educator Fellowship and Master of Health Professions Education – Canada programs. The awarding of this position is subject to the usual University approvals.
The Centre for Health Education Scholarship is a research and education centre that strives to enhance the health of people and populations by supporting the educational practices of the health professions. CHES is a world-renowned centre that supports the development of educational theory based on classroom and clinical phenomena, and the application of educational theory into the classroom and clinical environments. CHES provides educational consultation to the Faculty, University, provincial, national, and international health professions education organizations. CHES is supported by faculty within the centre, and with partnerships across the university, nationally, and internationally. At its core, CHES builds capacity and supports health professions educators and connects health professions educators with others to support them in asking and answering important educational questions through scholarly work.
Reporting to the Director of the Centre for Health Education Scholarship, the successful candidate will provide leadership to the Clinical Educator Fellowship Program, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Streams, and the Master of Health Professions Education Canada Program, that are delivered by CHES. This leadership position includes organizing all educational activities in the programs, including recruitment and selection of trainees, in concert with partners. Management and administration of these programs will include, but is not limited to, activities such as policy development, supporting learners in the successful completion of their program, managing the budget, and liaising with relevant partners. The selected candidate is expected to demonstrate appropriate standards of excellence in research and education, as well as to engage meaningfully in academic and professional affairs. The successful candidate is expected to establish and maintain high-quality, productive relationships across cultural differences and work in a collaborative and inclusive manner, fostering equitable experiences, and a respectful environment for all staff, faculty, and students.
The successful candidate will hold a Master’s degree or higher in a field relevant to health professions education. Candidates must have demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentorship. Understanding of Indigenous cultural safety and working with Indigenous learners is an asset. Demonstration of ongoing involvement and productivity in health professions education research is an asset. Administrative, teaching, or leadership experience with undergraduate or postgraduate programs is an asset. Demonstration of experience in curriculum design is an asset.
