Dr. Stan Bardal, Assistant Teaching Professor at the UVIC Division of Medical Sciences and UBC Island Medical Program, visited CHES for 2 days. During his visit, Dr. Bardal pursued his educational interest in studying the process by which new ideas are introduced into medical professions and the challenges involved.

Researchers may be aware of upcoming changes to grant application procedures at UBC. Effective January 1, 2014, researchers are required to include “Indirect Costs” (overhead) in their grant applications. Additionally, a new form replaces previously used cover sheets. CHES Welcomes Visiting Professor, Dr. David Irby
CHES is pleased to be hosting our June Research Rounds speaker, Dr. David Irby, from June 18 to 21, 2012. Dr. Irby is professor of medicine and until recently the vice dean for education and director of the Office of Medical Education at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. He is a former senior scholar at The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, where he co-directed a national study on physician professional preparation.

CHES is pleased to be hosting our February CHES Rounds speaker, Dr. Geoff Norman.
Dr. Norman is professor of clinical epidemiology and biostatistics, McMaster University. He a PhD in nuclear physics from McMaster University, and a MA in educational psychology from Michigan State University. His research is in the area of expert diagnostic reasoning, as well as the various aspects of how medical students learn and has contributed to the theoretical foundation of problem-based learning. He has also developed and validated a number in innovative assessment methods and has made substantial contributions to assessment methodology.
Congratulations on a very successful RIME conference in Denver this year.

CHES Welcomes Visiting Professor, Dr. Sioban Nelson
CHES is pleased to be hosting our December CHES Rounds speaker, Dr. Sioban Nelson. Dr. Nelson has been the Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto since 2005. Her current research interests include the investigation of the impact of the Rockefeller Foundation on global nursing in the mid twentieth century; health policy, most particularly with respect to the assessment of competency in professional practice and the regulation of health professionals; mobility and the global health professional workforce; and the transnational history of nursing.

CHES hosted its first annual Celebration of Scholarship at the Vancouver Convention Centre on October 4, 2011. CHES is pleased to report that 87 faculty, staff, and students from 7 faculties and schools across UBC and other institutions participated in the event. Ravi Sidhu Wins AFMC Young Educators’ Award
Congratulations to Dr. Ravi Sidhu on receiving this year’s AFMC Young Educators’ Award. This award recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to medical education and who are in the early years of their academic career. The award will be presented at this year’s Canadian Conference on Medical Education to be held in Toronto in May.
Sarah Dobson Takes on the Role of Grant Facilitator.
Congratulations to Sarah Dobson! Effective January 2011, Sarah has taken on the role of grant facilitator as well as research manager for CHES members engaging in health professions education research. She will work with faculty and trainees to identify opportunities for collaboration with other CHES members, elaborate potential sources of funding, and offer advice in the development of grant proposals for educational research. CHES is delighted to congratulate the three faculty members selected as UBC’s nominees for the CAME Certificate of Merit Award 2011: Clinical Educator Fellowship alumnus, Dr. Luke Chen, as well as Drs. Judy Vestrup (IMP) and Paul Mackey (NMP). Recipients receive their award at the CAME AGM on the Sunday night of the CCME meeting.
Visiting Professor Dr. Angela Towle Celebrates Recent Successes
Visiting Professor Dr. Angela Towle is celebrating two recent successes – her paper, “A meeting of experts: the emerging roles on non-professionals in the education of health professionals” (A. Towle & W. Godolphin), has been accepted for publication in the journal Teaching in Higher Education Special Issue on ‘Leaving the Academy’ (October 2010), and she has been awarded a grant for the ‘Interprofessional Health Mentors Program’ from the UBC Teaching & Learning Enhancement Fund 2011-2012, $49,993. CHES Welcomes New Administration Coordinator
CHES is pleased to welcome Ravina Johal as the new CHES administration coordinator. In her new role she will be using her considerable communications experience to spearhead communications initiatives, and she will ensure smooth functioning of ongoing CHES administrative activities.
Postdoctoral Fellow in Health Professions Education Research
CHES seeks a postdoctoral fellow who is interested in entering the field of health professions education. In order to qualify for the 2011 fellowship, applicants must have completed a PhD program in education, social sciences, humanities or other relevant discipline at a recognized university by July 1, 2011 (Defense date must fall between July 1, 2008 to July 1, 2011).
To promote the success of the potential candidate’s developing research career, the position offers maximal protected time for research, resources to assist in grant capture, funds for professional meetings, opportunities for productive research collaboration, and mentorship in conducting and disseminating research in health profession education. The postdoctoral fellow will be integrated into the innovation and research processes of the faculty, ensuring a rich understanding of health professions education. Junior Scholars Mentorship Program (JSMP) Call for Applications
CHES is delighted to announce the 2011 Call for Applications for the Junior Scholars Mentorship Program (JSMP). The JSMP is intended to support junior faculty who are early in their academic career and are focusing their academic work on an educational scholarship track. The program will be a partnership between CHES and the Junior Scholar’s home department. This partnership aims to provide faculty mentorship and early career support toward the development of a sustainable program of educational scholarship within the Faculty of Medicine. CHES Congratulates Outgoing Clinical Educator Fellows
Dr. Luke Chen (Hematology) and Dr. Adam White (Endocrinology) graduated from the Clinical Educator Fellowship Program on June 30, 2010. Both Dr. Chen and Dr. White are pursuing Masters degrees in Medical Education from the University of Dundee. We congratulate them both and wish them well as they begin faculty positions at UBC. Dr. Chen was instrumental in organizing the CEF Academic Half-Day and we thank him for his contribution to the Program.

Dr. Rose Hatala (Medicine) and Dr. Cary Cuncic (Medicine) were awarded the 2010 Faculty Development Initiative Grants. Dr. Hatala’s proposal is entitled “Modification of an OSCE Format to Enhance Patient Continuity in a Summative Medical Student Clinical Examination“. Dr. Cuncic’s proposal is entitled “Exploration of Preceptors’ Experiences in a Continuity – Based Clinical Model”.

The Canadian Conference on Medical Education was held in St. John’s, Newfoundland, from May 1-5, 2010. The UBC Faculty of Medicine has 22 abstracts accepted for the scientific program, including one abstract submitted by a medical student (class of 2012). Congratulations to all!

CHES Junior Scholars Dr. Sandra Jarvis-Selinger and Dr. Adam Peets were awarded grants in the 2010 call for applications for the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund. Dr. Luke Chen, a Clinical Educator Fellow, also received TLEF funding for his research proposal. The Faculty of Medicine submitted 26 proposals and received funding for 18. Congratulations to all!
